Baltimore Orioles (28-22, 2nd -3.0) vs. Boston Red Sox (32-20, 1st +3.0)

Streak / L10

BAL: -2, Lost 7 of 9 / L10: 3-7

BOS: +3, Won 3 of 4 / L10: 7-3

NEW: Quality Start minimum requirements (experimental, suggestions welcome)

- 6 IP, 2ER

- 7 IP, 3ER

- Game ERA must be 4.00 or less

Game 3 (7:05)

(QS=2)Mike Wright (2-3) 5.05 (1.40/.278), 34/16 (5HR)

vs.

(QS=1)Joe Kelly (2-0) 6.30 (2.00/.293), 26/16 (4HR)

Mike Wright: Wright has allowed 10 earned over the last 10 IP, but the Orioles have won the last three games he has started. Even still, he really hasn't been that good this month one start aside against the struggling (at the time) Tigers. After learning recently how stubborn Wright is and how in his head he is, I can't say I'm that big a fan of his anymore. If he's not interested in listening to people more experienced than he is (including a HOF'er), the says a lot about the guy unfortunately. Boston is playing much better now than they were in April, so Wright may have quite a bit more trouble this time around.

Splits & Sits

90 vs. left: .354/.411/.489, 3HR

109 vs. right: .216/.296/.330, 2HR

2016 Home (4 starts, 1 relief)

(1-2) 4.32 (1.40/.272), HR

Career vs. BOS (2 starts)

(1-1) 8 IP, 11H, 10ER, 3HR

vs. Batter

David Ortiz 3/5, 2HR, 3RBI

Dustin Pedroia 2/5, HR, 2RBI

Blake Swihart 1/4, 2B

Mookie Betts 1/3, 2B, RBI, 2K

Xander Bogaerts 0/3, K

Travis Shaw 0/3, K

Jackie Bradley Jr. 1/2, BB, K

Hanley Ramirez 1/2

Joe Kelly: After two promising seasons in StL where he split time as a reliever and starter, Kelly has failed to even sniff those levels of success since then. He has been, at best, underwhelming since joining the Red Sox two years ago and has seen his numbers rise steadily over that time. Kelly was demoted in mid April and made his return on the 21st and threw 6.2 innings of one hit ball against the Indians, but gave up five runs on nine hits (2HR) and three walks in 4.2 innings against Toronto in his last start. Kelly has always had good stuff, but is unable to control it with any kind of consistency. Kelly struggled through five innings against the Orioles in April allowing two runs on seven hits and five walks.

Man, the Orioles have been completely overmatched in these first two games by a Boston team that is head and shoulders better. There's not a whole lot more to say about it so far. Boston is the superior team between the two and is a real reality check for any Orioles fans who had hopes of winning the division. Unless Boston collapses or has a slew of injuries, I just don't see it happening. This season could turn out very, very bad for the Orioles and it's entirely possible Boston sweeps the Orioles at home here, but there is still hope for a split if the Orioles can find a way to beat Joe Kelly and Mike Wright finds out a way to neutralize Boston's lineup.

I'm not confident with Mike Wright at all against this explosive Boston lineup, but Joe Kelly doesn't scare me either. He did, however, hold the Orioles to two runs in five innings earlier this season. There could be a lot of runs scored in this one.

In the division, the Orioles have fallen three back and Toronto has won two in a row and seven of 10. Sitting five back, the Orioles may find themselves in third place behind Toronto after this series is over. In the Central, KC is up 8-4 on TB in the fifth as they go for their fifth straight win and the White Sox are up 6-4 on the Mets in the ninth. Cleveland has lost three in a row and would fall three behind KC if they can hold off the Rays. In the West, the Angels and A's start their games soon, but all teams are currently playing off a win in their previous game. Texas has won four in a row, Seattle two and Houston four who are suddenly only five games under .500.

Greetings, fellow sufferers,

I was hoping for a change in Orioles luck tonight, but that doesn't happen with fastball down the middle. Let's see if we can out of the first-inning no more runs allowed. Transfer

    • At one time, the Orioles seemed to be in the minority regarding keeping guys under wraps and to lower pitch counts.  Now this seems to be the rule among teams in the minors.
    • Billy Cook just keeps grinding his way along.   He gets a little better every year while advancing through the system.  He's at .862 OPS overall but .929 after almost 100 PA at Norfolk.   Striking out less.  Walking more.  Hitting more doubles but less homers so far.  Stealing some bases.  Playing all three OF positions, 1B and 2B.   Can I get a top 30 for this kid @Tony-OH? 😄
    • He isn’t letting Grayson coming off a shoulder issue throw a bunch of pitches. I’m sure they had a number in mind before the game.
    • You aren't going to impress me with Kremer being the only decent player they got for Machado.  Sorry, that isn't an example of his competence.  As for Means, he got his improvement as a result of going outside of the system with an outside baseball training facility.   He gets a lot of credit for GrayRod though as many criticized the pick.
    • The Bryce move was less controversial because he didn't escape the guardrails of the draft regulating one and only one Club he had the opportunity to sell his labor to. Last CBA round during the international draft negotiations Tony Clark gave out a quote like "in principle we don't like drafts of any kind" Being selfish for Orioles and with Elias having the extra pool money this year because of Gunnar, I've wondered if Ethan Holliday could quick drop out of 11th grade with a few weeks to go, grab that GED, play one game for Stillwater Community College and earn reclassification to 2024.     Then he just needs to pull that John Elway or Eli Manning thing.
    • Received my voucher email last night (they'll be in my account as of May 24).  There's no way they could've known I was there for the whole game, so it appears everyone who had a ticket for that game and a MyOriolesTicket account received a voucher. Pretty generous!  Good for 2024, most M-Th games (select "blackout" dates excluded).
    • That's pretty impressive since there are a lot of businesses in DC that will have Nats season tickets regardless of the record.
